Abstract

513,668. Compound four-stroke-cycle engines. STEVENS, A. H. (Pratt, N. P.). April 8, 1938, No. 10810. [Class 7 (ii)] Exhaust gases from a group of engine cylinders 61 are mixed with air, transferred in a non-flaming condition to a second group 62, and compressed and ignited therein to produce a second power impulse. The two groups of cylinders may be in line, or superposed one on the other, the lower group being of larger diameter. with pistons working in tandem with those in the primary cylinders. An enginedriven air-pump 89 supplies the air required for the secondary stage, and at starting may have a connection to the carburettor for enrichment of the secondary charge. The flame-extinguisher consists of a chamber with internal baffles and gauze screens ; it may also be cooled by tubes 96 through which air passes.
