Abstract

512,744. Screw propellers. ENGLESSON, J. E.' Jan. 9, 1939, No. 693. Convention date, Jan. 10, 1938. [Class 114) In apparatus particularly hydraulically-controlled variable pitch screw propellers through which pressure fluid is passed from a stationary sleeve provided around a rotary conduit,. and through which sleeve is a passage for high pressure fluid and at the ends of which are packing rings, there is provided between the high pressure 'passage and the packing box a space in the contacting face of the sleeve which communicates with a passage for discharge of the fluid to a low pressure conduit. A fixed sleeve 2 is provided with passage 5 which is coupled to a high pressure conduit 7 and a passage 6 which is coupled to a low pressure conduit 8. The sleeve has end packing pieces 17 and 18 and surrounds a rotary shaft 1 in which there are passages 15, 16 communicating with 17 and 18 respectively. The pressure supply passes through a control rod 14 to a regulating valve of a variable pitch propeller as the outer side 9 is the passage for the return of low pressure fluid. In the face of the sleeve a ring passage 19 is provided between packing 17 and the high pressure passage 3 and this ring communicates by a passage 20 with a ring 4 opening to the exhaust pipe 8. In a modification where two pipes are used alternatively for high and low pressure, the regulating valve being outside, a further low pressure passage is provided adjusting the other packing ring and these passages are coupled to a separate low pressure pipe.
