Abstract

511,226. Tins, cartons, &c. BARLOW, R. and WORTHINGTON, J. July 18, 1938, No. 21257. [Classes 66 and 125 (iii)] The flange of the externally fitting lid, or the wall of the body portion, of a tin, carton or like container intended to be vacuumised and formed of sheet-metal, cardboard, glass or moulded plastic material is provided with a continuous rib or bead adapted to engage with the smooth wall of the other portion. The engaging means may consist of an inset outward curl 5, Fig. 2, or an inward curl, provided at the edge of the flange 4, or of an inward bead formed in the flange above the edge, and a bead 8 may be provided in the body wall to facilitate removal of the lid by levering. Fig. 3 shows the alternative construction in which the lid flange is smooth and the bead 9 projects from the wall of the body part. The containers are provided with sealing medium 7 disposed in a channel 6 in the lid and adapted to be engaged by the edge 2 of the body part.
