Abstract
504,598. Shock - absorbers. METALASTIK, Ltd., and GOLDSCHMIDT, M. June 27, 1938, No. 18949. [Class 108 (iii)] In a shock-absorber in which a number of elements each comprising a pair of sleeves of differing size rigidly connected together, are disposed in series to.be slidable along a common guide member, the elements are interconnected by rubber blocks surface-bonded respectively to the inner surface of the larger sleeve part of one element and to the outer surface of the smaller sleeve part of the next adjacent element, the inner surface of a terminal block being surface-bonded to the outer surface of one of the two parts, the relative movement of which is to be damped whilst the outer surface of another terminal block is surface-bonded to the other of said parts. As shown the lugs 3, 2 are connected to relatively movable parts of a motor cycle &c. such that on compression rubber blocks 13, 9, 17 are forced into cylinders 15, 8, 5 respectively. The rubber block 13 is adhesively connected to a spindle 16 and to a cylindrical ring 15 attached to a flange 14 provided with a hollow stem 10 slidable on the spindle 16. The rubber block 9 is adhesively attached to the stem 10 and to a cylindrical ring 8 provided with a flange 7 and stem 4. The rubber block 17 is attached in a similar manner, the stem of the flange 6 however being secured to the lug 2. The rubber blocks may have different stress-strain characteristics by using rubber having different degrees of hardness, or by perforating the rubber. Certain of the rubber blocks may contact with rigid surfaces to restrict its distortion. The rubber bushes may act in tension.
