Abstract

315,941. Steffen, F. May 11, 1928. Metallic springs of the kind in which end thrust is applied to columns formed by radially expansible and compressible helical springs surrounding a split ring or sleeve are constructed so that the helical spring is coiled externally or internally around or within more than one split ring. In the buffer shown in Fig. 5, two expansible helical springs 4 are each coiled around several split rings with conical engaging surfaces which ensure expansion of the springs when the buffer is compressed. A volute spring 8 takes the first impact and a stop 13 limits the amount it is compressed. Split cylindrical sleeves of a softer metal may be interposed between the spring and the split rings. Various similar constructions are shown, including some in which the helical springs are arranged inside the split rings.
