Abstract

501,516. Hydraulic shock a;bsorbers. NEWTON, N. B. July 28, 1937, No. 20858. [Class 108 (iii)] A piston - type hydraulic shock-absorber adapted to be mounted within coil springs is provided with spring abutment means and mounting device secured to one end of the cylinder and a complementary spring abutment means and further mounting device secured to the piston rod projecting from the other end of the cylinder, and a sleeve also secured to the piston rod sliding on the outside of the cylinder and adapted to relieve the piston rod of lateral thrust from the spring by transmitting such thrust to the cylinder. As shown a cylinder, a of a shockabsorber is attached to a gimbal h and the piston rod is connected to a cover e attached to a gimbal g: A spring c surrounds the cylinder a and abuts a fixed plate b and a movable plate d carried by the gimbal g. A centring ring f surrounds the cylinder and guides the spring c and a gland nut a<1> acts as a limiting stop with a shoulder g<1> on the gimbal. In a modification the spring is in two parts separated by a ring bearing on a dust sleeve surrounding the shock absorber cylinder. The spring end plates form the flanges of eyeleted lugs to which the cylinder and piston rod of the shock-absorber are connected.
