Abstract

Resinous products are obtained by heating together a mixture of urea, phenyl thiourea and formaldehyde in the presence of a condensing agent, e.g. sodium hydroxide, ammonia or hexamethylene tetramine, or hydrochloric, sulphuric or phosphoric acids. In an example, a moulding powder is obtained by heating urea and phenyl thiourea with aqueous formaldehyde and hexamethylene tetramine, water being distilled off in vacuo and the syrupy resin hardened by further heating and pulverized after cooling. The powder may be used alone or may be mixed with colouring-materials, softeners, and fillers such as wood powder, asbestos, linen, cotton, paper, &c.
