Abstract

An adhesive for use in making plywood and other composite structures comprises a stable aqueous alkaline condensation product of a phenol and formaldehyde, and a vegetable tannin containing phlobatannin. Tannins specified are quebracho, mimosa, gambier, averam and myrtan. The tannin may be added in solid form, as an aqueous solution or as an aqueous caustic alkali solution to the resin mixture, either towards the end of the resin-forming reaction or to the alkaline solution of the resin; in amount for example of 10 to 100 parts by weight per 100 parts of solid resin. Hardening accelerators, e.g. paraformaldehyde, and fillers, e.g. coconut shell flour may also be added. Examples are given. Specification 673,634 is referred to.
