Abstract

Thermosetting resins are obtained by heating a liquid "resol" (prepared by refluxing a phenol with an equimolar or greater amount of formaldehyde in alkaline medium) and a liquid or solid "novolak" (prepared by heating a phenol with less than an equimolar amount of formaldehyde in acid medium) in proportions such that the molar ratio of initial phenol to initial formaldehyde is 0.85-1.20 to 1 in the presence of excess of alkali until substantially all uncombined phenol is eliminated, e.g. up to 120 DEG C. under vacuum. Preferably, the resol is present in such proportion that its catalyst alkali is stoichiometrically in excess of the acid catalyst of the novolak, but alkali may be added if necessary. The products may be ground and mixed with wood flour, lime and stearic acid to form moulding powders. Examples illustrate the heating together of resols prepared from phenol and formalin in the presence of caustic soda and novolaks prepared from phenol and formalin in the presence of sulphuric or oxalic acid.
