Abstract

Cold-setting acid-hardening resinous glues are obtained by adding to a partially condensed phenol-aldehyde resin acid and furfuryl alcohol in an amount not exceeding 10 per cent by weight of the resin. Furfuraldehyde may also be added; thus the furfuraldehyde of the glue compositions described in Specification 609,315 may be replaced wholly or in part by furfuryl alcohol. In examples: (1) a viscous liquid phenol-resin is mixed with 5 per cent by weight, each of furfuryl alcohol and furfuryl aldehyde. On the further addition of 10 per cent HCl a composition is obtained which sets to a black lustrous solid in six hours; (2) the bottom layer of a 1 to 1.5 phenol-formaldehyde caustic soda condensate is mixed with 5 per cent furfuraldehyde and 8 per cent conc. HCl.
