Abstract

A water-soluble resinous condensate is made by heating together (a) melamine, (b) formaldehyde and (c) salicylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in an amount of from 0.5-2.0 mols. per mol. of melamine. Reaction may be performed in aqueous or alcoholic solution. Aqueous solutions of the condensates may be used as paints or adhesives, or for treating paper (see Group VIII) or textiles. The dried product may be used as a moulding powder with the usual additives. Curing of the condensates is accelerated by p-ethyl toluene sulphonic acid. In examples a mixture of melamine, aqueous formaldehyde and salicylic acid or sodium salicylate is heated on a water-bath, the pH adjusted to 7-8 with alkali and the solution heated under reflux for five hours.
