527,993. Resinous condensation products. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 25, 1939, No. 12414. Convention date. April 27, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Resinous compositions, suitable for casting, are prepared by blending a condensate of phenol, cresol or mixtures thereof with an aldehyde, prepared by reaction in the presence of an alkaline catalyst for a period sufficient to form the phenol-alcohol but insufficient for the product to separate into layers, with an acidic soluble alkyd resin, and de-hydrating the mixture under reduced pressure and at a temperature not exceeding 100‹ C. Suitable alkaline catalysts for the condensation of the phenol and aldehyde are hydroxides of the alkaline earth metals (calcium, strontium and barium) and hydroxides, carbonates, cyanides and borates of the alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and calcium) especially potassium cyanide, lithium carbonate, potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide ; when strong bases are used neutralization may be effected be means of weak organic acids such as oxalic, malonic, aconitic, tricarballylic citric, tartaric or lactic acids. In examples the alkyd resin is prepared by condensing glycerine, phthalic anhydride, adipic acid and ethylene glycol. The resinous compositions are prepared by condensing phenol and aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of (1) sodium hydroxide, (2) potassium cyanide, (5) lithium carbonate, (7) lithium hydroxide, (8) sodium metaborate or (9) barium hydroxide, blending the condensate with the alkyd resin and dehydrating the mix.
