Abstract

495,218. Cylinders. TIPPEN, F. J. Aug. 3, 1937, No. 21326. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In a compression-ignition oil engine, means for adjusting cylinder clearance comprise a block 9 forming part of the combustion chamber and a screwed abutment plug 14, which are forced together by a nut 16 to compress a packing 23, e.g. a copper ring. A reduced edge of the block 9 enters a cylindrical port 19 on the cylinder head, a ring of predetermined thickness being located in the annular space 18 thus formed. The two parts of the combustion chamber in the block and head are, respectively, hemispherical and ellipsoidal. The liquid-fuel injector 25 may be inclined. In a multicylinder engine, each injector is replaced, in turn, by a pressure gauge to enable the clearance of individual cylinders to be adjusted to produce even running.
