[Class 7 (iii)] A compression-ignition engine has a flattopped piston a, a substantially hemispherical combustion chamber b less in diameter than the cylinder and piston, inlet and exhaust valves e, f opening into the combustion chamber and disposed symmetrically about the cylinder axis and a fuel injector g delivering fuel towards the top of the piston. As shown, the valves are at about 90 degrees to one another and their heads are recessed to follow substantially the contour of the combustion chamber, which is waterjacketed.
