Abstract

487,928. Centrifugal pumps. FUSIONMOTEURS. Sept. 30, 1937, No. 26480. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1936. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII In an internal-combustion engine in which the suction of the engine is used for priming a pump driven by the engine, or for other purposes, the engine induction pipe is shut off from the carburetter or from the fuelinjection pump while the engine suction is being employed for the auxiliary purpose. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, a three-way cock 4 is employed between the engine 2 and the carburetter 3, by means of which the engine cylinder can be shut off from the carburetter and put into communication with a chamber 9, the lower part of which is connected by a pipe 5 to the suction pipe 18 of the centrifugal or other pump 1. During priming the pump discharge pipe 19 is closed by a valve 20, which may be a hand-operated valve, or a check valve. A valve 21, which may be spring- pressed or hand-operated, indicates when the pipe 19 is full of liquid. As shown in Fig. 5, the three-way cock may control an auxiliary supply of petrol from a chamber 15 during priming. During normal running, the cock 13 puts the upper part of the chamber 15 into communication with the atmosphere and the lower part into communication with the float chamber of the main carburetter. When the plug 13 is turned to effect priming it simultaneously cuts off the chamber 15 from the atmosphere and from the carburetter, and puts it into communication with a jet 14 in the plug cock.
