Abstract
477,087. Stays. AUSTER, Ltd., CARTY, S. A., and SMALL, W. W. June 22, 1936, Nos. 17253 and 24340. [Class 65 (i)] A stay for a vehicle windscreen comprises a pair of relatively movable bars, one having a series of notches or recesses and the other carrying a locking device comprising a lever having an eccentric cam edge adapted to engage any of the notches with a progressive binding action clamping the bars together. In the form shown, the notched bar 6 is fixed to the screen 1 and the other bar 4, of channel section, is pivoted at its upper end to the fixed frame of the screen and has fixed to its lower end a stirrup 8 embracing and sliding on the bar 6 ; the stirrup 8 carries a pivoted lever 12 formed with an eccentric edge which enters any of the notches in the bar 6, as the lever 12 is turned, with a wedging action. The lever 12 is formed with a hook portion to engage a pin 14 on the frame to hold the screen closed. The stirrup 8 may carry a spring-pressed part bearing against the side of bar 6 opposite to the notches instead of engaging the bar directly. In a modification, the bar 6 may be pivoted to the screen at its lower end and slide inside the member 4, forming a telescopic stay ; in this form the locking lever may be carried on the bar 6, projecting through a slot in the member 4 to engage notches at the edge of the slot.
