Abstract

403,669. Stays. OTTINO, G. P., 18, Lonsdale Road, Kilburn, London, June 27, 1932, Nos. 18146 and 25692. [Class 65 (i).] A stay for a vehicle windscreen comprises a rack pivoted to the screen (or frame), and a spring-controlled pawl, pivoted on the frame (or screen), which normally slides over the teeth of the rack against the pressure of the spring, means being provided to lock the pawl in engagement with any tooth of the rack In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 4, a slotted bar c is pivoted slightly off its centre line to the windscreen f and has rack teeth a cut in one side of the slot. The bar c slides in a guide h pivoted at o on the windscreen frame g, and this guide carries a pivoted pawl p with a laterally projecting tooth r for engagement with the rack ; the pawl is pressed against the rack by a spring s and may be locked in the engaging position by a cam lever u, also pivoted on the guide h. The first notch a<1> of the rack is deeper than the remainder, so that the tooth r of the pawl does not engage the bottom of it under spring pressure, but the locking lever u forces the tooth r further down the notch a<1> so as to draw the screen tightly closed and hold it so, this action being aided by the eccentric pivoting of the bar c. Those faces of the teeth which the pawl engages to resist closing movement of the screen are made steeper than the others so as to give equal resistance to hand pressure in both directions allowing for the effect of the weight of the screen. In a modification, Fig. 6, the rack is formed in the upper side of the slot in the bar c, and the spring s is placed between the cam lever u and the pawl p. According to the first Provisional Specification, anti-friction devices may be provided for the sliding stay-bar. According to the second Provisional Specification, the locking lever may have a third position in which the pawl is held clear of the rack, and a spring may be provided to press the lever towards this position ; the rack may be straight instead of arcuate, and may be pivoted instead of fixed to the windscreen.
