Abstract
449,698. Variable - speed gearing; positive clutches. CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, Alvis Works, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3273. [Class 80 (ii)] Positive clutch members a, a<1>, Fig. 1, in change-speed gearing are synchronized prior to engagement by the momentary engagement of friction clutch members g<1>, f<1>. As a striking member i is advanced towards the right carrying the dog member a, it engages and carries with it also a sleeve g carrying the friction member g<1>. Then the member i slips relatively to the sleeve g to complete the positive clutch engagement. This momentary engagement is effected by a detent, shouldered surface, or recess k, Fig. 3, on the side of a slot in the sleeve, being engaged by a roller l on the striking member i. The roller l by turning round facilitates the slipping action.
