444,433. Cycle driving - mechanism and brakes. GOECKEL, W., Bergerhof, Radevormwald, Rhineland, Germany. Feb. 27, 1935, No. 6320. [Classes 136 (i) and 136 (ii)] A variable - speed driving - mechanism for cycles, comprising an intermediate clutchcontrolled chain drive enclosed in a casing at the crank bracket, is combined with a brakeactuating member or driver provided with a free-wheel clutch and adapted to operate a rear-wheel brake on back-pedalling. Two or more sprocket wheels k, m of different sizes are mounted by ball &c. bearings on the crankshaft a, and are connected by chains to sprockets kl, ml respectively fixed to a countershaft q, the gearing being enclosed in a case f. A clutch disc n is adapted to slide on the shaft a, under the control of a rod or Bowden-wire transmission, so as to engage pins o on either of the sprockets k, m, the middle position enabling the gearing to run free. The drive is transmitted to the rear wheel by a sprocket t<1> and chain x, enclosed in a case y. The gear cases f, y may contain oil, and the case f may be divided beneath openings for the bearings, so as to facilitate access to the gearing. The driver for the back-pedalling brake consists of an annular member G<1>, which is mounted by means of a free-wheel clutch of the wedging- roller type on a disc C fixed to the shaft a, and is provided with a lever arm connected by a pull rod A to the actuating lever of a drum brake W on the rear-wheel hub. Modifications are referred to in which the clutch disc n may be mounted on the countershaft, or the driver G<1> may act on the sprockets k, m to operate an ordinary back-pedalling brake in the rear hub ; or the clutch disc n may itself act as the driver.
