Abstract
481,737. Change - speed driving- mechanism for cycles &c. MARTELLI, I. Sept. 14, 1936, No. 25038. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1935. [Class 136 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In two-speed gears, for bicycles and like vehicles, of the chain type in which the gear changes automatically with the speed of the vehicle, a chain 21 engages simultaneously with two sprocket wheels 20, 22, one 20 carried on and connected by a disconnectible pawl 5 with a member 1 concentrically secured to the cycle hub &c. and the other 22 carried on and connected by a one-way ratchet clutch 35 with a member 15 eccentric to the hub and connected by an Oldham coupling 8, 10, 9, 10<1>, 18 to the member 1. A weight 25, Fig. 4, carried by a cycle spoke is controlled by an adjustable spring 26 and is connected by a rod 24 to the pawl 5 so that at high speed the sprocket 20 and member 1 are connected to give high gear, the sprocket 22 rotating idly at a lower speed. When the cycle speed falls, the pawl 5 disengages and the sprocket 22 takes up the drive. Rollers 21<1> are arranged in the grooves 101 of the Oldham coupling to minimize friction.
