Abstract

456,170. Cycle driving - mechanism. GREEN, S., 36, Peel Street, Dresden, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. June 13, 1935, Nos. 17001/35 and 16086/36. [Class 136 (ii)] In driving-mechanism for pedal cycles, spring means is connected to the hub of the rear wheel and to a rim or drum of larger diameter loose on the hub, the rim or drum being rigidly connected to the wheel rim by spokes &c., whereby the usual sprocket on the hub (either free-wheel or fixed wheel), driven by chain from the pedals, acts on the hub to tension or compress the spring, which reacts on the rim or drum to drive the rear wheel. The usual sprocket and free-wheel 11 drives the rear-wheel hub 12, on which is mounted, by ball bearings 14, a drum 13, which is rigidly connected to the wheel rim by spokes. The drive is transmitted from the hub 12 to the drum 13 by a coil spring 15, one end of which is secured to the hub and the other end to the inner periphery of the drum. In order to prevent the pedals from flying back on account of the reverse action of the spring, a ratchet or free-wheel device 16 is mounted on the opposite side of the hub to the drive, and is fixed to the cycle frame by means of an arm 17. The spring is normally stressed and is prevented from completely unwinding by the engagement of a tooth 12<a>, projecting from a collar 12b keyed to the hub, with a corresponding tooth projecting from the drum 13. In order to render the spring 15 inoperative when a direct drive is required, levers 19 carried by the hub are adapted to be rocked into engagement with recesses 18 on the drum by means of a collar 20 adapted to slide on the hub spindle 21 under the control of a cable 23 &c. and a retracting-spring. In a modification, the spring 15 is replaced by a helical spring mounted in an external peripheral groove in the drum 13, one end being fixed to an eye on the drum, and the other end connected to the hub 12 by a cable guided over a pulley.
