443,301. Change speed gearing. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and MERRITT, H. E., Lockwood, Huddersfield. Sept. 14, 1934, No. 26378. [Class 80 (ii)] A four-speed gear comprises a driving shaft a and a driven shaft e, each carried in two bearings a<1>, a<2> and e<1>, e<2> respectively, and a layshaft f carried in three bearings f<1>, f<2>, f<3>, the third speed and direct-drive being arranged on the forward side of the central bearings e<2>, f<2>, whilst first and second speeds and reverse are arranged behind the said bearings. Third speed is brought in by clutching helicallytoothed wheels h and j respectively to the driving shaft a and to a loose layshaft-wheel g, by sliding clutches c and i, the wheels h and j being secured to the driven and layshafts respectively. A splined wheel m slides on the driven shaft for first speed and reverse, and second speed is brought in either by clutching a loose constant-mesh wheel o with the wheel m, or by sliding the wheel o. Synchromesh clutches may be used.
