607,791. Change-speed gear. NAYLOR, J. T., and ATKINSON LORRIES (1933), Ltd. Nov. 19, 1945, No. 31022. [Class 80 (ii)] Five speeds and reverse constant-mesh gearing comprising the usual layshaft 8, parallel to aligned driving and driven shafts 1, 2 and driven by the usual non- sliding wheel-pair 4, 7, has three or more additional constant-mesh pairs of which one pair 13, 16 slide together' to provide direct-drive topspeed by clutching the splined wheel 16 to the driving pinion 4 at 17, and fourthspeed by clutching the loose wheel 13 to a fast layshaft-wheel 10 at 15; whilst the other two pairs each have a non- slidable wheel 10, 11 fast on the layshaft and a wheel 20, 22, freely slidable together on the driven-shaft and each having clutchteeth 19, 23 for respectively clutching the splined wheel 16 for third-speed and a raised part 6 of the driven shaft 2 for second-speed. The wheels 9, 13 may be coupled together for sliding movement by a ring bolted to the wheel 13 and engaging the lower part of the selectorfork groove in the wheel 16. The usual splined wheel 25 provides first-speed and reverse, the latter by a stepped idler 26.
