Abstract

424,855. Controlling variable-speed gearing. BONN, C. R. H., 56, Gibson Street, Hillhead, Glasgow. Jan. 24, 1934, No. 2442. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable - speed gearing in which the speed changes are effected through the agency of fluid supplied by a pump 32 driven from the driving-shaft 2 of the gearing, the pump 32 is adapted to be driven from the driven shaft, not shown, when the latter shaft overruns the former, as when a vehicle is coasting. Fast on the shaft 2 is the first element 33 of a train of gearing the last element 331 of which is connected to the shaft 22 of the pump 32 by a one-way clutch 4. This train is normally operative to drive the pump. A sleeve 66 geared to the driven shaft carries the first element 5 of a slower-driving train the last element 771 of which is connected to the pump shaft 22 by a one-way clutch 88. When the train 33, 331 ceases to drive, the train 5, 77<1> continues the drive so that fluid is kept available for effecting the speed changes. The application is described to an arrangement described also in Specifications 418,505 and 420,731, in which a pair of geared selector valves direct the pressure fluid selectively behind cone brakes which render operative different epicyclic trains.
