Abstract
404,622. Pressure gauges. TAYLOR, J., 7, Winton Circus, Saltcoats, Ayrshire, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. July 12, 1932, No. 19735. [Class 106 (ii).] A gauge for measuring base pressures in small arm and shotgun cartridges comprises a container housing one or more piezo-electric crystals and located in the breeching of the small arm, the construction being such as to permit the striker to pass through to fire the cartridge cap. The device comprises a steel tube 3 with an insulating lining 4, a front steel disc 1 into which is screwed an inner steel tube 2, a front copper disc 5, a quartz crystal 6, a rear copper disc 7 having a shoe 15 and an insulating bush 19, and a rear steel disc 9. The steel firing-pin 10 passes through the device as shown. The device is fixed in a steel housing 12 by a screw 16, while the housing 12 fits into the rifle breeching 13 holding the cartridge 14. A handle 18 manipulates the housing 12. The metal housing is earthed and a contact pin 11 bearing on the shoe 15 is connected to one terminal of a ballistic galvanometer. Other recording means, such as a cathode ray oscillograph, may be used. Two quartz or tourmaline crystals may be used, turned to disc shape and drilled each with a central hole, and mounted with faces of like polarity towards each other but separated by an insulated plane disc of copper or other good conducting metal. The crystal faces may be plated with copper, instead of, or in addition to providing the discs.
