Abstract

372,978. Change-speed gearing. WOLSELEY MOTORS (1927), Ltd. and BODEN, O., Drew's Lane, Ward End, Birmingham. June 17, 1931, No. 17538. [Class 80 (ii).] In change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles, both a direct clutch drive and an overdrive are brought into action by the same pivotal movement of a control lever 21 ; for the direct drive, strikers 17, 18 are moved simultaneously, while for the overdrive, the lever 21 is depressed so as not to move the striker 17 along with the striker 18. The neutral position is shown in Fig. 1. A countershaft 12 is constantly driven from a driving shaft 5 by a pair 14, 13. A doublehelical gear 11 splined on the shaft 12 is slid axially along with its mating gear 10 on a sleeve 8 loose on an inner sleeve 3 splined on a driven shaft 1. For the direct drive, the sleeves 3, 8 are moved to' the right simultaneously to the position of Fig. 2 in which clutch teeth 4 on the sleeve 3 engage and are driven by clutch teeth 6 inside the gear 14. The overdrive through the train 14, 13, 11, 10 is brought in when the sleeve 8 alone is slid to the right from the position of Fig. 1 to that of Fig. 3 in which clutch teeth 9 on the sleeve 8 engage the teeth 4 and the gear 10 is clutched to the shaft 1. Second speed is effected by sliding the striker 17 to the left of Fig. 1 to engage a pair 15, 16. First speed and reversed drive are effected by sliding another gear &c. from a third striker 25, Fig. 4. The strikers slide on fixed guides 20. In neutral, gaps 22, 23 in the strikers 17, 18 are side-by-side on a level, and a heel 21a of the lever 21 engages both strikers as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The strikers are then moved to the right together as described. On depressing the lever 21, the heel 21a comes opposite an undercut gap 22a in the striker 17 so that, when the heel 21 a moves to the right to the position of Fig. 3, the striker 18 alone is moved. This depression of the lever 21 is effected against the pull of a spring 24, Fig. 4. A locking plate 27 is adapted to be depressed along with the lever 21 to lock the strikers 17, 25 against movement. This plate 27 is integral with a plate 26 which slides vertically in fixed guides 30, Fig. 3, and is bent at 28 to form a trough in which a lug 29 on the lever 21 can slide. Lateral movement of the lug 29 in the trough is free, but vertical movement of the lug carries the plate. 26 with it.
