Abstract

444,359. Controlling change speed and reversing gearing. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd., Kimpton Road, Luton, Bedfordshire. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3274. Convention date, Feb. 14, 1934. [Class 80 (ii)] In change-speed gearing of a kind comprising a first changespeed gear A, Fig. 1, in series with a second and synchromesh change - speed gear B, reverse is obtained by a supplementary manipulation, such as raising a control lever 6, and then moving the lever 6 to a position for obtaining a forward speed, such as firstspeed. In the gearing of this kind shown, the two gear arrangements A and B have a common countershaft 4, and a loose gear 1 can be clutched either to the clutch shaft 2, or to the tail shaft 3, or to both. A clutch gear 32 is moved to change speed in the gearing A by sliding a bar 10 and this is done by moving the lever 6 transversely as shown in Fig. 2, the lever 6 engaging a cranked lever 12, 11 for the purpose. This is movement of the lever 6 in the transverse slot 7<1> Fig. 5, in the H gate 7. Provided a pinion 14, Fig. 1, is clutched to the countershaft 4, two different speeds are effected in the gearing B when a double synchromesh clutch C is moved one way or the other by sliding a bar 8, Fig. 4. The bar 8 carries for this purpose an upstanding fork 9, which straddles the lever 6 so that speed is changed in the gearing B by moving the lever 6 in either of the longitudinal slots 7<2>, Fig. 5, in the gate 7. According to the invention, the lever 6 is first raised to unclutch the pinion 14, Fig. 1, and is then moved to first speed position, that is so as to clutch a wheel 13 to the shaft 3. A gear clutch 15 when slid to the left frees the pinion 14 and engages one of a pair of reverse idlers 20, 19, Fig. 2. This clutch 15 is moved by a fork 16, Fig. 4, which slides on a guide 22 and is connected by a lever 27 to a fork 23 adjacent the lever 6. When the lever 6 is pulled upwards against a spring 24, a lug 26 upon it passes through a retaining guide 28 into engagement with the fork 23. When the lever 6 is then moved to first speed position, the gear clutch 15, Fig. 1, is slid left as the clutch C is slid right, so bringing in reverse. Changing in the gearing A may be facilitated after the engine clutch 37 is opened and the throttle closed by applying a brake 36 automatically to the clutch shaft 2 by engine suction. When the changing bar 10 moves so as to connect lower and upper ports 45, 46, Fig. 3, by a duct 44 in the bar, suction rendered operative in a chamber 40 pulls down a lever 43 so as to apply the brake 36 momentarily. The bars 8, 10 are interlocked as shown in Fig. 2. Specification 403,422 is referred to.
