Abstract

355,482. Variable-speed gearing; one-way clutches. BIERETZ, E. D., 3208, Hayward Avenue, Baltimore, and NEAL, J. J., Bengies, both in Maryland, U.S.A. Aug. 5, 1930, No. 23415. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed gearing comprises a female helix 29, Fig. 1, carried by the driving-shaft 10 axially movable alternatively into engagement with male helices 31, 30 fast on driven shaft 11 for driving or braking shaft 11 respectively. The helix 29 is formed in a coupling sleeve 25 which slides on feathers 23 inside a hollow extension 22 of shaft 10. The sleeve 25 has extensions 28 fitting over cylinders 26, 27 fast on shaft 11 so as to produce a dashpot effect when either clutch engages or disengages. The invention is shown applied to a three-speed gear on a vehicle, the clutch described being the direct-drive clutch. The gears 49, 62 for middle and low speeds are formed integrally with the coupling sleeves. Gear 49 is shown moved to the right into clutched operative position. If the engine is throttled, shaft 11 overruns gear 49 so that the latter. screws off and moves to neutral mid-position. Further movement of gear 49 to the left engages the screw-such as 30 on the left which has the effect that the engine can be used as a brake. Control rods 36 &c. are arranged so that when the accelerator is released, the coupling members will come to neutral. Reversing.-gearing (not shown) is preferably fitted to the engine side of the transmission. The engaging ends of helices 29, 31 are shown in Fig. 8. A form of clutch with a single clutch helix is illustrated.
