405,095. Change-speed gearing. ALVIS CAR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., CLARKE, G. T. SMITH-, and DUNN, W. M., Alvis Works, Holyhead Road, Coventry. Dec. 15, 1932, No. 35544. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to means for effecting reversed driving in change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles of the type comprising for the lowest forward speed a pair of constant-mesh gears such as 26, 27 connecting a lay shaft 12 to a driven shaft 16, one of these gears being fast on, and the other loose and clutchable to, its shaft. The reversed drive is brought in by sliding an idler into mesh first with a gear fast on the lay shaft and then with a gear fast on the driven shaft. The invention is described as incorporated in a four-speed gearing with synchromesh devices on all speeds described in Specification 405,200. The fast gear 26 of the first-speed pair is on the lay shaft and an idler 13 for reversing is meshed fully with the gear 26 before it moves further into mesh also with another gear 29 fast on the driven shaft 16.
