Abstract

403,319. Change-speed gearing ; claw clutches. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and THOMAS, W. J., Gosford Street, Coventry. July 1, 1933, No. 18749. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to means for synchronizing claw clutches in changespeed gearing. The sliding clutch member is in two parts, an outer claw sleeve b, Fig. 3, splined on an inner member a which is in turn splined on a driven shaft c. A selector bar e engages the sleeve b, which carries the member a along with it in the first part of a striking displacement from a neutral position, a spring-pressed ball f in the member a engaging a middle notch h in the sleeve b. This striking displacement is arrested when a frictional drag ring o carried by the member a engages a friction clutch surface m on a claw clutch member i with which sleeve b is to be positively engaged. The drag ring o has one or more lugs q projecting outwards through gaps r in an overhanging part of the member a so that the drag ring can turn relatively as the lugs q move from end to end of the gaps r. The claw sleeve b has inwardly-projecting clutch and spline teeth d, Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 5, two of the teeth d in line with each gap r and denoted d<1> are shortened or cut away, and there is a tooth between them removed so as to leave a space t. When the leftward striking displacement has been stopped by the drag ring o, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 5, when an inclined shoulder u on one of the mutilated teeth d<1> engages an inclined flank v on the back of the lug q. The frictionclutch drag on the ring o brings the teeth of the sleeve b into synchronism with the teeth of the coacting claw member i, whereupon the lug q is cammed to the middle of the gap r by the inclines u, v and the sleeve b slides on into full engagement with the teeth i. At the same time, the ball f, Fig. 3, rides out of the middle notch h and into a side notch h<1>, and the lug q is accommodated in the length of the space t, Fig. 5. A double-ended sleeve b is shown adapted to engage claw members i, j, alternatively.
