[Class 74 (ii).] A rib multi-feed machine is provided with means at one feed adjustable into and out of operation for knitting on a certain lot of nee dles in one bed and with similar means at another feed which comes into action when the firstmentioned means is out of action. The invention is described as applied to a four-feed machine provided with rotary cams and with jacquard mechanism arranged in sections around the machine. At one feed, A, a certain limited lot of needles is arranged for producing, say, 1/1 rib fabric while at feed D 2/2 rib, say, is producible. Feeds B, C (not shown) may produce the same stitch as feeds A, D, or it may be otherwise. In the dial long butt needles 13 are arranged in pairs followed by a short butt needle 14 and similarly with the cylinder needles 18, 19. At feeds A, C thin cams 20, 21 engaging only the long butt needles are used, while at feeds B, D cams 22, 23 thick enough to reach all the butts are used. When cams 20, 21 are in action and cams 22, 23 are out of action 2/2 fabric is knitted at feeds A, C. There are two stitch cams 24, 26 at each feed, one of them drawing somewhat tighter fabric than the other and employed when 1/1 rib is being made. These cams are adjustable to draw either long or short stitches or to be inoperative. They are controlled by a bob pin 77 acting on striker arms 148, 149. The other dial and cylinder cams are similarly controlled. The bob pins are preferably concentrated at one station and operated by a perforated paper &c. pattern band. A change-speed gear allows the machine to operate more slowly at such times.
