[Class 74 (ii).] Relates to the production of double-topped stockings on straight-bar machines wherein the first row of loops are held on the needles during the knitting of the double top and finally released and knitted with the last row of loops on completion of the top. The needles on which the first row of loops are held are associated with auxiliary sinkers d, Fig. 1, which are slotted to hold these loops whilst the remaining needles are associated .with ordinary sinkers c, at least one of the sets of sinkers being arranged in pairs. The auxiliary and ordinary sinkers are mounted on a common knocking-over comb and the upper webs of the sinkers d are so formed that in the rearmost position of the comb the first and last thread laps are engaged by and released from the retaining edges x. An auxiliary notched presser bar r, Fig. 9, mounted on the sinker head cap above the continuous presser bar but independently operated, depresses the hooks of alternate needles during the formation of the first two rows of loops before the needle tips reach the thread on the loop forming sinkers.
