[Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] The engine A, Fig. 1, drives the differential gear f<2> or axle shaft through a constant-mesh changespeed gear comprising transverse shafts C, F, a universally - jointed shaft L, and a second transverse constant-mesh change-speed gear comprising shafts c<1>, f<1>. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the first change-speed gear provides for two forward speeds by means of gear trains D, E and d<1>, e<1> controlled by a clutch H, a reverse speed being obtained by means of a gear train d<2>, d<3>, e<2>. A synchronizing device is provided at I. The second change-speed gear provides two forward speeds. The shaft L is provided with a telescopic joint at l<1>. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, in which the engine is too long for the arrangement of Fig. 1, the engine A is arranged askew, and the change-speed gears D &c. are bevel gears. The two change-speed gears may be conjointly controlled by a preselector device as shown in Fig. 2. The clutch fork Q of the first two-speed gear is operated by a rock-shaft P having arms p<2>, p<3> jointed to rods r<1> R sliding in a fixed guide T. The clutch fork q<1> of the second two speed gear is operated by a rock-shaft p<4> having arms p<6>, p<7> jointed to other rods r<2>, r<3> also sliding in guide T. Any two adjacent rods may be operated by a slidable member U which is first rotated to select the two rods it is desired to operate. The member U is fixed to a square or like shaft u<1> sliding in a rotary sleeve V formed with teeth v<1> engaged by a gear quadrant X. When the quadrant is rotated by the preselector control lever (not shown) and a link Z the member U is rotated to the desired position. When the member U and its shaft u<1> are moved axially the two rods selected are moved back and the rock-shafts P, p<4> are rotated in one direction or the other to put the selected gears in operation. If one clutch fork is already in the desired gear position its rod is not affected by the sliding movement of member U. The shaft u<1> and its member U are connected by a joint u<3> and a rod u<2> to a lever which may be the usual clutch control. The second change-speed gear may drive the axle through reduction gearing. The engine A may be of V-type as shown in Fig. 5, with its crank-shaft at a higher level than the axle shaft f<3>.
