Abstract

1,012,389. Positive clutches; change speed gear. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Aug. 7, 1964 [Sept. 3, 1963], No. 34680/63. Headings F2C and F2D. An axially slidable clutch sleeve 17 of a baulk ring synchronized positive clutch for a motor vehicle gearbox, is maintained in the clutch engaged position by projections 49 on spring-pressed inserts 41 engaging grooves 50 or 52 in the sleeve. The inserts 41 engage an additional groove 51 in the sleeve when the clutch is disengaged and on initial axial movement of the sleeve the inserts engage recesses in the baulk rings 24d to centre the latter and to move it axially into engagement with friction cones 24d<SP>1</SP> fast with the driving clutch element 36d. As shown, two double baulk ring synchronized positive clutches selectively connect an output shaft 3 to pinions 6, 7, 8 in permanent mesh with countershaft gears 11, 12, 13 driven from an input shaft 2 or directly connect the input and output shafts. Reverse may be obtained by moving a pinion (not shown) axially into mesh with pinions 14, 20.
