Abstract

354,116. Lubricating cams and tappets. BARBAROU, M. J. B., 28, Boulevard d'Argenson, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Oct. 18, 1930, No. 31312. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1929. [Class 12 (ii).] In valve gear for internalcombustion engines comprising a cam 2 actuating a pair of inlet or exhaust valves 7, 7a through a T-shaped tappet 4, 11, the tappet is prevented from rotating by forming the guide portion 11 with flats 4a at its upper end engaging corresponding flat guides 12a. The guiding surfaces are lubricated by oil supplied through the hollow cam shaft and through a radial bore in the cam to an orifice in the top of the tappet leading to the hollow interior of the guide 11. The oil collects in a cap 19 fitted over the bottom of the guide, and is forced up a groove on the outside of the part 11. In a modification, the cam shaft extends at right-angles to the heads 4 of the tappets, the guides being then lubricated through bores extending through a cam-shaft bearing arranged between a pair of tappets.
