Abstract

621,557. Making valve tappets. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. June 19, 1945, No. 15539. Convention date, June 21, 1944. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] Flanging; stamping.-Expansion of the thin walls of a hollow, cylindrical valve tappet 40 is prevented by one or more internal ribs 74. The lower end 52 is fitted with a pin 56 carrying a roller 54 which co-operates with a cam 38 on the crankshaft 18. The upper end 72 is closed by a plug 60 having a spherical recess 62 in which seats the end of a push-rod 42 actuating a rocker 34 to operate an inlet or exhaust valve 28. The rib 74 and thickened end 72 are preferably formed from a blank, Fig. 4, having a uniform bore 86 and fitted with ribs 90, 92 on the outside which, on being forced through a ring die 94, are compressed inwardly.
