Abstract

344,225. Change-speed gearing. LEA & FRANCIS, Ltd. and EUGEN, C. M. van, Lower Ford Street, Coventry. March 5, 1930, No. 7197. [Class 80 (ii).] Motor car change-speed gearing comprises aligned driving and driven shafts 2, 3 and a parallel lay shaft 11 enclosed in a gearbox divided transversely into two parts, one part 21 being integral with a portion of the engine or clutch casing 43, while an integral end wall 23 on the other part 22 forms a transverse partition which incorporates needle-roller bearings 34 supporting the shafts between their ends. On one side of partition 23 are constant-mesh gears 6, 10, 14, 15 and on the other side are gears 24, 25 slidable into mesh with gears 26, 27, the whole yielding a four-speed gear in which gear pairs transmitting effort are supported by bearings close to them. The casing part 22, which contains the gear control 42, is built up as a unit having an end cover 9 and a, spigotal connection 29 with the other casing part 21.
