Abstract

338,113. Adams, E. S. R. July 10, 1929. Machine guns. - A muzzle attachment for assisting recoil in a Vickers or like machine gun has a muzzle piston 35 engaging a cylinder 1, the outside of which is provided with integral cooling fins 10, 11 to reduce the quantity of nickel fouling which collects in the cylinder. The cylinder is shown integral with an outer casing 2 which is attached by interrupted collars 13 to a member 4, Fig. 1. closing the front end 36 of the gun casing and serving to guide the barrel. A spring- actuated plunger 15 mounted in a housing 16 engages recesses 17 in a flange on the member 4 to lock the attachment in position. A cone 21, Fig 9, combined with a sleeve 27, which masks the gas escape holes 12, serves to obscure the flash of discharge. To prevent displacement of the sleeve 27, a pin 29 thereon engages a slot in the casing 2 and a flange 28 thereon fits between the casing 2 and the member 4 when the attachment is fixed to the gun casing.
