Abstract
558,093. Automatic guns. PAINE; H. SCOTI-, and JAGGARD, R. W. July 16, 1940, No. 11778. Addition to 519,070. [Class 92 (ii)] An air-cooled gun, in which the cooling-jacket is supplied with compressed air as described and claimed in the parent Specification, has, according to the present invention, a valve, for controlling the flow and expansion of air into the jacket, which is automatically opened when the gun is in use. In the form shown, a ribbed aluminium sleeve 10, forced on to the barrel, is surrounded by a jacket 12 fast with the gun muzzle and freely mounted at the rear end in the breech casing. When the gun is not in use, a rounded rib 17 on the jacket engages a surface 18 on the breech casing to obturate the flow of the compressed air entering the jacket through ports 24. When the gun is in action, the relative thermal expansion of the parts causes the rib 17 to move away from the surface 18 and allow passage of the compressed air over the ribbed sleeve and out of the jacket through apertures 15. The valve action may be controlled by the gun trigger or by the gun recoil.
