Registering webs.-In flat-platen typewriters and like machines emploving a multiple-ply web, the plies are registered by means of tensioning- devices which are arranged at the rear of the platen and are operated by the web-clamping pedal or consist of spring-tensioned or counterweighted rollers. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the web roll f is carried by brackets k on bars i pivoted on the frame b of the platen e, the first ply 1 being tensioned over a guide-roller g, and the other plies 2 - - 6 being looped and passed over guide-rollers h. The plies have perforations for engaging pins at the front of the platen, engagement being maintained by a pivoted clamp q operated by a pedal r. The plies pass under a registering-roller m which is carried by arms s on a shaft t mounted in the bars i, the arms being connected by a rod y to an arm z on a shaft 12 operated by the pedal. On depressing the pedal, the clamp g and roller m are raised, and the web can be drawn forwards until a new form is in position, registration of the plies being effected by the roller on release of the pedal. The arrangement shown in Fig. 5 consists of arms 21 connected to the pedal r and provided with pegs 22 for engaging the perforations in the web, the arms being carried by a shaft 20 which is mounted loosely in the framework. On depressing the pedal, the pegs are depressed to permit of the web being drawn forwards, and on releasing the pedal the pegs enter the perforations and effect registration of the plies. The pegs may be provided on a spring-tensioned roller mounted in the arms 21. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 each of the plies 1, 2, 3 passes through a pair of rollers 14, 15, the rollers 15 being provided with tensioning-springs. In another arrangement, the plies pass under tensioning-rollers which are carried by counterweighted arms.
