Abstract

317,865. British Tabulating Machine Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Tabulating Machine Co.). Aug. 25, 1928, [Convention date]. Folding paper.-In statistical machines having means for printing lists of items on a web, mechanism driven in synchronism with the webfeeding mechanism is provided for transversely folding the web into flat-pack or zig-zag formation, the folding-mechanism preferably being of the kind comprising a reciprocating carrier for alternatively operative folding-members. The folding-mechanism may be associated with means for applying adhesive to the web to secure the folded sections together along one edge. In the mechanism shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a web 49 passing over the platen 14 of the statistical machine is led from a roll 4 over a feed-roller 5 and guide-rollers 51, 52, 53, the feed-roller being provided with a ratchet-wheel 10 cooperating with a pawl 9 on a rocking arm 8 connected to a link 7 having an adjustable connection 75 to a bell-crank 11 engaging an arm 13 which is rocked at the end of each cycle of the machine. The folding-mechanism 3 is mounted on a casing 58 having a top plate 18 which is pressed into contact with cross-bars 20, 60 by means of springs 19. Two folding-members 21, 21<1>, each comprising plain and knurled rollers 33, 34, are carried by shafts 32 mounted at each end on bars 23 which are connected by links 24 end have rollers 25 running on oppositely inclined rails 22. An endless chain 28 at each side of the casing passes over front and rear sprocket-wheels 27<1> and carries a disc 26 which is arranged between the associated pair of bars 23. The rear sprocket-wheels 27<1> are geared to a shaft 35 provided with a pinion 31 which is connected by a chain 69, Fig. 1, to a sprocketwheel 70 on the shaft of the feed-roller 5. At each operation of the machine, the discs traverse the bars one step towards the right or left, the movement being reversed at the end of the traverse in either direction. During traverse of the bars towards the right, the folding-member 21<1> descends initially and thereafter engages and folds the web, and at the end of the traverse depresses the top plate and pushes the web underneath the cross-bar 60. When the traverse of the bars towards the left commences, the folding-member 21<1> rises, permitting the top plate to grip the web, and the folding-member 20 descends initially and thereafter engages and folds the web. At the end of the traverse towards the left, the web is pushed underneath the cross bar 20 and is gripped thereby when the folding-members are again traversed towards the right. The pinion 31 is provided with a friction coupling for arresting the bars and folding-members if they are obstructed or the web is too tight. The top plate carries a handle 39 which is depressed to release the web from the folding- member 21<1> and permit of the web being gripped and withdrawn through a slot 76 in the casing. To facilitate gripping, the handle may be provided with a finger-lever 41 carrying a bar 40 for raising the web. The feeding and folding mechanisms for the web may be mounted on a standard 6. For securing the folded sections book-fashion along one edge, adhesive is applied automatically by means of a roller 45, Fig. 3, carried by rocking arms 71 one of which has a finger in the path of a roller carried by one of the arms 23. The roller takes adhesive from a spirally grooved roller 44 mounted in a reservoir 43.
