[Class 100 (iv).] Web feeding and guiding arrangements ; ink-ribbon mechanism.-In a flat-platen typewriter or like machine provided with supports and tensioning- means for paper webs and carbon webs, the supports for the carbon webs are arranged between rearward extensions of the platen frame, and the tensioning- means is arranged to retract slightly the carbon webs after they have been drawn forwards. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, a frame 23, detachably mounted in arms extending from the platen frame A<2>, carries a paper roll 30, spring-braked carbon rolls 28, and guides 25 and snubbing-bars 24 for the paper webs 30a and carbon webs 28a. The guides are mounted in curved slots 25a and are retracted by springs 26. To facilitate threading of the webs, the guides can be drawn forwards by means of'slides 44, Fig. 2, having lugs 44a engaging the guides. The slides are mounted on studs 45 on a frame 23 and are drawn forwards by means of a rod 46 passing through slots 46a, 46b in the slides and frame, the slots 46b having recesses for holding the slides in forward position. The platen B is depressed to release the webs by means of pedal-operated linkage B<1>. A clamp 18 having a tearing-edge 18b co-operates with the front plate 16 of the platen frame and is secured to rocking arms 19 having rollers 19a engaging the platen, the clamp being raised when the platen is depressed. The paper and carbon webs are led over alternate guides and on to the platen, the paper-webs being engaged by hooks 16a and tensioned by the guides, and the front edges of the carbon webs being slightly behind the hooks. When a form has been typed, the paper webs are drawn forwards, the carbon webs being held stationary by the rolls 28. The carbon webs are periodically drawn forwards and torn off with the paper webs. The guides are then permitted to retract slightly the paper and carbon webs, and the paper webs are again drawn forwards, and engaged by the hooks. Alternatively, the paper webs may be grasped to permit retraction of the carbon webs only. The front plate 16 may have a slotted part 16c and a depending member 16d for guiding a loose tally-sheet 41 when it is drawn off the platen. The bottom carbon web may be connected, for instance by clips 43, to the part 16c. The clamp 18 may be dispensed with, depending hooks for engaging the paper webs being arranged under the front plate.
