Abstract

283,720. Shillito, B. J. Dec. 23, 1926. Variable-speed gearing yielding low speeds of the driven shaft comprises an epicyclic train controlled through an irreversible worm pair 32, 11 by a disc and roller variable gear. Planets 15, 15<1> nearly alike are carried by a worm-wheel 2 driven from a worm upon a driving-shaft 18. The planets 15 mesh with a control sun gear 8 connected by a sleeve 9 to the worm-wheel 11. The planets 15<1> mesh with a wheel 12 fast on a driven central shaft 3. The carrier wheel 2 is connected by its boss 4 directly with the disc 6 which coacts with a roller 25 slidably splined on a transverse shaft 19. The shaft 19 is carried by pivoted arms 20 biased towards the disc by springs 22. The shaft of the worm 32 is geared to the shaft 19 by a chain pair 36. The roller 25 is moved across the disc 19 by a hand-operated screwed shaft 30 with suitable end stops 39. The disc 6 has a central loose section 37 in the form of a stud. When the roller 25 engages the stud 37, it is not driven and the worm pair 32, 11 holds the control wheel 8 stationary. A slow differential motion is imparted to the wheel 12 and shaft 3. As the roller 25 is moved across the disc 16, this motion is progressively reduced, until it reaches zero in the end position of the roller.
