327,309. Blyth, L. M. April 20, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing. - In a variable speed gear for transmitting heavy drives, a driving-shaft 1 mounted in bearings 3 has fixed at its end a worm-wheel 11, gearing with worms 10 carried on a U-shaped frame 12, 12 keyed to a driven shaft 2. The worm shafts are rotated by skew-bevel wheels 9, in mesh with a skewbevel 7, rotatably mounted on the shaft 1, and variably driven through pulleys 18, 19 by expanding pulleys 14, 15. The skew-bevels may be replaced by ordinary bevels by having gear wheels on the worm shafts meshing with gear wheels on the shafts of the gear wheels 9. The expanding pulleys 14, 15 are controlled by levers 21a, 22a fulcrumed at 23, their ends engaging oppositely threaded parts of a rotatable shaft 20. According to the Provisional Specification, the wheel 7 may be driven from an auxiliary pilot engine.
