Abstract

315,920. Chambers, J. H. April 14, 1928. Divided on 315,476. Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which an epicyclic train d, b, c enclosed in its driving- member e is combined with an external train for giving low speed and reverse, as described in Specification 161,613, uses external gearing h &c. disengageable by radial movement. The external train h, h<2>, n, Fig. 2, is adapted to be moved in a swinging frame i into and out of mesh with a gear m, Fig. 1, on driving-ring e and with a gear g secured to the annulus d of the epicyclic train. Sun wheel c and annulus d are adapted to slide, so that, by means of the external train h &c., first speed and reversal are obtained by clutching sun c to the driver e and to the casing f respectively. The other speeds are obtained as in the Specification referred to. The frame i is operated by a toggle and cam o. In a modification, worm gearing is used in the external train.
