Packing, metallic; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for; stuffing- boxes, substitutes for.- Packing, which is especially applicable for the piston-rods of Diesel engines, comprises loosely fitting rings 4<a> providing a cooling path for the gases and segmental packing-ring 4 having tangential joints and arranged in pairs, the rings being contained in carriers 2 having packing-rings 7 in their peripheries. A lubricating-ring 14, which may be integral with one of the carrier rings, is formed with passages 13a leading to a supply of lubricant, the ring being provided with external packing-rings 15. Each packing-ring 4 may be compressed by a spring 10, or a single spring 10 may embrace a segmental ring 9 surrounding a pair of wings 4. The rings 4, Fig. 4, may be compressed by split rings 11. In order to balance the pressures on the lateral surfaces, the rings may be formed with axial passages 4a leading to recesses 4b. Tapped holes 13 may be made in the carriers to facilitate removal.
