420,942. Pistons ; stuffing - boxes. MADSEN, T., 30, Stampgatan, Gothenburg, Sweden. Dec. 11, 1933, No. 34761. Convention date, Oct. 13. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] In composite packing comprising two mating split rings, each ring is formed with internal axial flanges 2, 8, Figs. 3 and 4, at the split and with an external axial flange 5, 9 opposite the split, in the case of piston rings, the arrangement being reversed in the case of stuffing-box packing. The portions 6 between the flanges is removed, as shown in Fig. 4, from one or both rings. The engaging surfaces of the two rings are preferably formed eccentric to one another. The radial portions of the upper ring adjacent the flanges 2, 5 may be removed, as shown in Fig. 5, and the ring may be formed with a tongue 11, which enters recesses in the lower ring and covers the joint. In a modification the upper ring is of full width at the joint and is formed with median grooves which are engaged by a rib on the lower ring.
