Securing pinions on shafts. - In high-speed reduction gearing for use with turbines &c. of the type in which a hollow pinion surrounds a flexible driving-shaft, to which it is rigidly secured at its end remote from the prime mover, additional driving-connections between the shaft and pinion are so constructed .as to effect driving-contact only when the shaft is sustaining its full torque. As shown in Fig. 1, a key 4 rigidly connects the shaft 2 and pinion 1 at one end, and at the other end projections 6 on the pinion interleave with projections on the shaft, the clearance therebetween being controlled by the use of liners of assorted sizes. Dust-covers 11, 12 are provided. In a modification, an axial leey-slot in the pinion coacts with a tapered key secured in the shaft, the clearance in the slot increasing from zero at one end to a maximum at the other.
