[Class 80 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A shaft a driven by a prime mover is journalled at its inner end b in a bevel wheel c supported in the gear casing g by a bearing h. The wheel c gears with a wheel c' on an output shaft d which may be, for example, the propeller shaft of a boat. The input and output shafts may, as shown, be inclined to one another so that if the engine shaft be horizontal, the propeller shaft will be directed downwardly, thus keeping the propeller well submerged. The input and output shafts are coupled by a pressure-oil operated coupling comprising a friction clutch e and a friction brake f constructed generally as described in Specifications 382,865 or 438,563, the coupling e being employed for ahead and the coupling f for reverse running.
