Abstract

232,565. Perrot, H. April 15, 1924, [Convention date]. Acting on drums; blocks and shoes. - Brake shoes, particularly such for engagement with the interior of a drum mounted upon the wheel of an automobile, comprise a hollow sheet metal member having a flat surface for the attachment of friction material and having also at least one piece secured to one end thereof to serve as a mounting piece or cam follower. The shoes 9, 10 are of channel section formed from sheet metal, preferably by stamping. The shoe 9 has a piece 15 of steel or other hard material attached thereto for engagement by a cam 17. The piece 15 may be riveted or otherwise secured to the flanges 14 of the shoe 9 in the manner shown in either Fig. 3 or Fig. 4. Pieces 20, 21, 26 are similarly attached to the other end of the shoe 9 and to the ends of the shoe 10 for mounting the shoes. The brake shown is of the kind in which one shoe 10 is pivoted at 25 to a fixed bracket 4, the pivot 12 of this shoe to the shoe 9 being free. The bracket 4 which carries also the spindle of the cam 17, is attached to a plate 2 bolted at 3 to the axle end 1. The hinge joint 12 between the shoes 9, 10 may be formed alternatively by a pair of straps 30, Fig. 5, secured to the web parts 13 of the shoes or by two pairs of straps secured one to each flange part 14, or the flange parts may, as shown in Fig. 7, be directly pivoted together. The pieces 15, 21, 26 may be provided with ears 28, 22, 27 for the attachment of returning springs 23, 29. Friction material is attached to the web part 13 of the shoes.
